Seasonal Allergy Tips
If you’re one of the millions of people with seasonal allergies, you know how the arrival of allergy season can make you feel. Sneezing, congestion, itchy eyes, a sore throat—all are symptoms that can be triggered by outdoor allergens such as tree pollen, grasses, weeds, and molds. Don’t let your symptoms get the better of you. Below are some tips to help carry you through the season:

Find the right treatment
You may want to begin with an over–the–counter, nonsedating antihistamine. A saline nasal spray and antihistamine eye drops can provide relief of congestion and itchy, watery eyes while throat lozenges such as Sucrets® can help relieve a sore, irritated throat. If symptoms remain, you may want to consult an allergist who can conduct an allergy test and prescribe a treatment plan that’s right for you.

Monitor pollen and mold levels
The National Allergy Bureau (www.aaaai.org/nab) as well as other online resources provide up–to–date reports on current pollen and mold levels. If you notice that allergen counts are high on a particular day, limit your time outdoors. If being outside for an extended period of time is unavoidable, consider wearing a pollen mask to limit your exposure to allergens.

Close your windows
This prevents the pollen and mold that are circulating in the air outside from making their way into your house. Turning on the air conditioner also helps to clean and cool the dry air inside.

Get clean
After spending time outdoors on a nice spring day, you’re literally covered with allergens! Take a shower as soon as possible once you come inside.

Use the washer…and dryer
Allergens stick to fabrics, which means they can transfer easily from your clothes to your furniture to other people in your home. Take time to wash your clothes, bedding, and pajamas as soon as you can. Avoid hanging sheets or clothes outside on the line to dry. Stick them in the dryer instead!
